TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

A TENS unit is a non-invasive nerve stimulation device. TENS devise use very small doses of electric current to promote natural pain relief. TENS units not only effectively block pain signals from reaching the brain but they also trigger the body to produce more of its own painkillers, known as endorphins. TENS is predominantly used for acute and chronic nerve related pain and can be used as an alternative to, or in addition to, pain medication.

NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation)

NMES is a muscle stimulator that administers a low-level electrical current through electrodes placed on the skin to depolarize the motor nerve and produce a skeletal muscle contraction. NMES is used for conservative and postoperative treatment of various orthopedic and neurological problems. Through contracting and then allowing the muscle to relax, NMES can reduce muscle spasms, tone weak muscles, increase blood circulation to the area, reduce edema and assist in the healing process.
